"But the rest of the grain offering shall be
for Aaron and his sons; it is a most holy part of the LORD's food
offerings."
- Leviticus 2:10
It
is easy for us to view God as selfish or even sick when we read through all the
sacrifices required under Old Testament Law. However, from the very beginning
God established the sacrificial system in order to meet the needs of His
people. The LORD would have His portion (Lev. 2:9), but verse 10 says He set
apart the best portion of food for the priests who worked in the temple. God is others-centered.
Abraham
referred to Him as the "LORD will provide" in Genesis 22:14 and
Matthew 6:8 tells us that He knows what we need before we even ask Him. It is
through the sacrificial system by which He fulfilled the physical needs of His
people and ultimately, through Christ, He has met mankind's greatest need of
all, and that is salvation from sin and death.
